Outlet and panel openings

Outlet and Panel Cutout Repair

An outlet box, switch, or panel opening cut too big — or in the wrong spot — leaves a gap no cover plate hides. We patch the drywall flush around it and match the texture so a standard cover plate sits flat. Send 2-3 photos and the year your home was built; quotes from photos are free.

When a cutout needs more than a bigger cover plate

An oversized outlet or panel opening is more wall than the cover plate was ever meant to hide, and a misplaced cutout — even a well-cut one — leaves a second hole once the box moves to the right spot. Both get patched the same way: drywall filled in flush around the opening, texture matched, and a standard cover plate fits over what's left.

If the cutout came from an electrician fishing wire or adding a circuit, rather than an outlet or panel specifically, see drywall repair after an electrician.

Patch and texture match

Most outlet and panel cutouts are a small repair; a panel opening or a cluster of outlets in one wall can run to a medium repair. Standard texture matching — orange peel, knockdown, or smooth — is included; detailed hand textures and premium finishes are priced on texture matching.

More than one opening in the same room, same visit, and the second patch is priced as an add-on rather than a full second repair.

Getting a firm price

Two things get you a firm price: a photo of the opening with the cover plate off (plus one from a few steps back), and the year your home was built. Send them here — there's no cost for a quote built from photos. If the photos raise more questions than they answer, an in-person look is $150, credited to the repair once booked.

Homes built before 1980 are likely to contain asbestos, and we don't work on homes built with asbestos materials, so the year matters just as much as the photos.

Repair day

Nobody needs to let us in in person — a lockbox code or an unlocked door works fine, and we'll text when we're on our way over. Tape and plastic go down over the floor and nearby surfaces before we touch the wall, and the area's cleaned back up once the opening is patched.

See the full price list for every size and add-on.

What to expect on repair day

Mario, the owner, does the work, and your home is protected while it happens.

You don't need to be home

Leave a lockbox code or the door unlocked. You get a text when Mario is on the way, and Mario locks up when the job is done.

Your belongings protected

Before starting, we tape plastic over the floor, nearby walls and anything close to the repair. If a couch is in the way, we move it and cover it.

Cleaned up before we leave

Patching makes some dust. The plastic catches most of it, and we clean up the work area before we go.

Outlet cutout repair questions

Can you fix an outlet box that was cut too big?

Yes. We patch the drywall flush around the opening and match the texture so a standard cover plate sits flat.

What if the outlet or switch was moved to a different spot?

We patch the old opening the same way as any hole repair, matched to the surrounding texture.

Do you repair panel cutouts too, not just outlets?

Yes — panel openings are patched the same way; larger panel cutouts are priced as a medium repair.

Can you patch more than one outlet opening on the same visit?

Yes, as long as they're in the same room on the same visit. The first is priced as a standard repair and each additional opening is priced as an add-on.

Hole in your wall? Text a photo.

Text, call or send the form anytime, day or night. You'll get a price back from Mario, the owner, who also does the repair.
