The hole behind the door

Doorknob Hole Repair

A door swung too far and the knob went straight through the wall — it's one of the most common calls we get. We patch the hole and match the texture, standard orange peel, knockdown or smooth included. A couple of photos and the year your home was built is all it takes for a firm price back by text, usually finished in one visit.

The classic doorknob hole

A door opens too far, catches a gust from an open window, or gets pushed hard, and the knob goes straight into the wall behind it. It's one of the most common calls we get, and most doorknob holes are a small repair — up to 6 inches — unless the door's caught the same spot more than once and widened the damage.

If the damage is closer to 2 ft by 2 ft or larger, see drywall hole repair for the full range of sizes we take on.

Patch and texture match

The damaged section gets cut back to sound drywall, patched, and textured to match what's around it — orange peel, knockdown, or smooth, all included at the standard tier. If the same spot has taken more than one hit, a door stop on the baseboard or a wall anchor behind the door is a cheap way to keep it from happening again; ask about it while we're there.

Once the patch is done, the wall is ready for a roller. If you want it painted too, a full wall repaint, corner to corner, is a separate return visit once the texture dries — see drywall repair and painting.

Getting a firm price

Getting a price starts with 2-3 photos of the hole and the year your home was built, sent through the quote page — there's no charge for a quote from photos. If the photos don't settle it, an in-person look is $150, credited toward the repair if you book the job.

Homes built before 1980 are likely to contain asbestos, and we don't work on homes built with asbestos materials, which is why the year matters as much as the photos.

Repair day

You can leave a lockbox code or just leave the door unlocked — there's no need to be home, and we'll send a text once we're on the way. The floor and nearby walls get taped and covered in plastic before we start, and once the patch and texture match are done, the area gets cleaned up and we lock up behind us.

The full price list covers every size and add-on.

What to expect on repair day

Mario, the owner, does the work, and your home is protected while it happens.

You don't need to be home

Leave a lockbox code or the door unlocked. You get a text when Mario is on the way, and Mario locks up when the job is done.

Your belongings protected

Before starting, we tape plastic over the floor, nearby walls and anything close to the repair. If a couch is in the way, we move it and cover it.

Cleaned up before we leave

Patching makes some dust. The plastic catches most of it, and we clean up the work area before we go.

Doorknob hole repair questions

How much does it cost to fix a doorknob hole in drywall?

Most doorknob holes are up to 6 inches, which is our small repair price — the service minimum. Larger damage is priced as a medium repair; see the price list.

The same spot keeps getting hit. Can you stop it from happening again?

A door stop on the baseboard or a wall anchor behind the door is a cheap fix for that — ask about it when we're on site.

How closely will the patch match the wall?

We match your existing texture carefully. How closely it reads depends on lighting and the wall itself, which is true of any patch work.

Do you paint the patch too?

The patch is left ready for a roller. If you want it painted, we do a full wall repaint, corner to corner, as a separate visit — see drywall repair and painting.

Hole in your wall? Text a photo.

Text, call or send the form anytime, day or night. You'll get a price back from Mario, the owner, who also does the repair.
